16482-loredana-nemes
Loredana Nemes
Only vaguely discernible men's faces behind a milky window pane: Their contours are unclear, their features vague. With her Linhof plate camera, Loredana Nemes (*1972 in Sibiu, Romania), who lives in Berlin, photographed male worlds in Turkish, Oriental, and Arab men's cafés in Neukölln, Kreuzberg, and Wedding. She experienced her first inspiring encounters for this work at the age of twelve during a six-month stay in Shiraz, Iran. With great curiosity about this foreign, fascinating culture, she approaches places that deny her entry as a woman. "I photograph their outer membrane, which only vaguely hints at the inner world and visualizes the separation between the worlds," says Nemes. The result of this photographic dialogue are portraits of Ali, Ünal, Kemal, or Rasim, which show us boundaries – cultural and visual.

Exhibitions: Galerie Baukunst, Cologne 30.6.–28.8.2010 | Schloss Neuhardenberg, Neuhardenberg 8.8.–2.10.2010 | Museum Neukölln, Berlin 20.11.2010–20.02.2011
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0582/8948/8049/files/odoo_9783775726979_98b4eea1-5171-401e-badc-66318fc899b2.jpg?v=1744111304
