Due to the repeatedly interrupted work process and finally Benjamin's suicide in 1940 in Portbou while fleeing from the German occupiers, the project remained unfinished and was published posthumously as The Arcades Project. Among the fragments was the essay \"The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction\" (1935–1939). In her introduction to a selection of Benjamin's handwritten notes, Nikola Doll clarifies the author's attempt \"to integrate the principle of montage as an epistemological technique.\" Here, colored reference systems, schemata, and diagrams form guidelines that lead through the thicket of excerpts and quotations.
