Adorno
During their exile, fleeing the Nazis, an intense exchange developed between the writer Thomas Mann and the philosopher and music theorist Theodor W. Adorno, who was forty years his junior. The two letters from Mann to Adorno, printed here, from 1943 and 1945, are related to Mann's Doctor Faustus. Adorno served as his advisor on musicological and music-theoretical questions, particularly regarding the twelve-tone music founded by Arnold Schoenberg, which Mann used in his novel – without, however, mentioning its originator. This led to accusations of plagiarism from Schoenberg, a story which the novelist Enrique Vila-Matas recounts in his introduction. Mann reacted to the accusation with incomprehension, as he considered the montage principle, which he explained in detail in the later of the two letters, to be legitimate in the sense of appropriation without acknowledging the source, even if "perhaps offensive."

Thomas Mann (1875–1955) was a writer and Theodor W.
