16689-ada-lovelace
Ada Lovelace
The English writer Augusta Ada King, Countess of Lovelace, daughter of Lord Byron, developed a deep interest in mathematics at an early age, especially in Charles Babbage's work on the Analytical Engine. This notebook, introduced by Joasia Krysa, contains a complete reproduction of her famous "Note G," one of a series of notes with which she commented on her translation of a text by Luigi Federico Menebrae on Babbage's research. Note G contains an algorithm, a kind of software, which was intended to enable Babbage's machine – which did not yet exist at the time – to carry out certain computational processes, and which is generally regarded as the first computer program. While Lovelace expresses doubts in Note G about a computer's ability to "develop artificial intelligence," elsewhere she foresees that the machine's activity could go beyond mere calculation. In her thinking, she succeeded in "combining scientific rationalism with a subjective imagination." Note G is supplemented by selected letters from Lovelace's correspondence with Babbage as well as her sonnet "The Rainbow."
Ada Lovelace (1815–1852) was an English writer.
Joasia Krysa is a curator, scholar, and agent of dOCUMENTA (13).
