16694-vyacheslav-akhunov
Vyacheslav Akhunov
During the Soviet regime, the artist, author, and philosopher Vyacheslav Akhunov hid his notebooks in stables and barns, in walls, and in matchboxes. Born in Osh, Kyrgyzstan in 1948, the artist understands the notebook as an artistic medium in its own right. Between 1973 and 2000, he primarily recorded his ironic and visionary drawings and collages on paper, archiving more than three thousand images for two hundred projects. This notebook contains excerpts from series of works created between 1974 and 1982. In Leeza Ahmady's introduction, Akhunov's collages and drawings—in the artist's words, “art-facts”—are revealed as sensitive premonitions of the collapse of the socialist era and as historical documents intended to outlast the present.
Vyacheslav Akhunov is an artist born in Osh, Kyrgyzstan, in 1948.

Leeza Ahmady is an independent curator living in New York; she is director of New York's Asian Contemporary Art Week and an agent of dOCUMENTA (13).
