For over 50 years, the artist produced tapestries with critical contemporary motifs. In her introduction to Ryggen's notebook, Marta Kuzma recounts the momentous phase beginning with the Great Depression in 1928, which plunged people into an existential dilemma in the face of rising fascism in Europe. Walter Benjamin described the precariousness of the situation at the time with the figure of a \"hunchbacked dwarf\" (bucklicht Männlein), as an emblem for the fragmented and desperate situation of many Europeans. Instead of resigning herself, the pacifist, communist, and feminist Ryggen reflected on her present in an unsuspected medium.
