16703-furio-jesi
Furio Jesi
The text in this notebook is an excerpt from Furio Jesi's book Spartakus. Simbologia della rivolta (Spartacus. Symbolism of Revolt), which he wrote in 1968/69. Jesi explored the interplay of myth and politics, and his thinking was based on an engagement with the theses of mythologist Karl Kerényi (1897–1973). The revolt of the Spartacus League, which began with the Reich Congress in Berlin on December 29, 1918, forms the starting point for Jesi's reflection on the specific experience of time in a revolt, in contrast to that of a revolution or a party. In the moment of revolt, historical time is suspended and gives way to a symbolic space-time in which an entire collective can find refuge. Nevertheless, afterward, "normal time" would be ushered in again, playing into the hands of the ruling political system. This "untimeliness" of revolt, as Andrea Cavalletti calls it in his foreword, is a paradoxical collective experience that inspired Jesi to develop a keen political theory.
Andrea Cavaletti (born 1967) teaches Aesthetics and Contemporary Literature at the Università Iuav di Venezia.

Furio Jesi was born in Turin, Italy, in 1941 and died in Genoa in 1980.
