17434-annette-messager
Annette Messager
"Whoever wants to be beautiful must suffer" is a proverb that, upon closer inspection, is frightening and disturbing. The French artist Annette Messager (born 1943 in Berck) explored this idea back in the 1970s when she compiled photographs from magazines for her groundbreaking series Les Tortures Volontaires.
In Messager's images, which appear as terrifying as they are absurd, breasts are lifted into suction cups, thighs are electrically massaged, and facial peels are peeled off like a second skin. Yet, the viewer's laughter catches in their throat, for women worldwide continue to voluntarily subject themselves to these and other procedures to appear more conforming and "beautiful."
Annette Messager herself only recently rediscovered these photographic prints in her studio. She is publishing the 81-part series here for the first time in its entirety and original size. In an accompanying text, the multiple Documenta participant recounts the genesis of the series.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0582/8948/8049/files/b43ae62ac1757646badf746d20905a37_0dc9f587-1dcc-4a63-89ff-4f58fd06c699.png?v=1724924408
