For the book Dust, he documented not only devastated landscapes around the Aral Sea in fascinating images but also the military exclusion zones of Priozersk and Kurchatov – products of the Cold War and, until recently, not listed on any map. Long-range missiles were tested in Priozersk under strict secrecy, and in the so-called Polygon near Kurchatov, hundreds of atomic bombs exploded until 1989. The atomic devices were detonated in close proximity to the unsuspecting population, and the horrific consequences of radioactive radiation were secretly studied.
