63609-yasser-alwan
Yasser Alwan
In his photographs, Yasser Alwan captured encounters with people in Cairo – on the streets, at the racetrack, in cafés, and at their workplaces: in tanneries, quarries, bookstores, and potteries. His portraits depict life in unimaginable economic poverty and political dispossession – and are precisely remarkable for refusing the clichés of social documentation and photojournalism. Between anger, pride, and resilience, a feeling of trusting connection is conveyed between the photographer and the subjects. At the same time, Alwan shows friends and family in the casualness of everyday life of Cairo's urban middle class. The memorable photographs in this volume come together to form a unique image of Egyptian society – they represent a work that belongs to the outstanding contemporary photography from the Arab world.

YASSER ALWAN (1964, Lagos–2022, Cairo) was born in Nigeria to Iraqi parents.
