64017-khalil-rabah
Khalil Rabah
How do cultural institutions and artists respond to protracted crises and international emergencies? Against this backdrop, Palestinian artist Khalil Rabah’s artistic practice explores what the future of art production might look like. In his conceptual works, Rabah explores the relationships between traditional and experimental exhibition situations as well as fictional and documentary narratives, creating imagined institutions. Falling Forward / Works (1995–2025) is the artist’s first major monograph, presenting a comprehensive selection of exhibition materials and previously unpublished archival documents. It also brings together contributions from curators and authors who examine mimicry and performativity, fleeting actions, but also knowledge production and archiving practices, and – crucially – the politics of humor.

KHALIL RABAH (*1961, Jerusalem) studied fine art and architecture at the University of Texas. The conceptual artist’s work is rooted in questions of identity and displacement. Rabah’s approach is characterized by the adaptation of institutional means of representation. In 2003, he founded the fictional Palestinian Museum of Natural History and Humankind. Conceived as an ongoing project, the museum finds new forms of presentation depending on the exhibition situation and location. He lives and works in Ramallah.

Anthony Downey is Professor of Visual Culture in the Middle East and North Africa at Birmingham City University, UK.
