64139-ruth-wolfrehfeldt
Ruth Wolf-Rehefeldt
As a self-taught artist and employed office manager in East Berlin, Ruth Wolf-Rehfeldt used her typewriter to condense letters and characters into graphics somewhere between concrete poetry, graphic design, and conceptual art. Her linguistic explorations, which tended towards the abstract and which she expanded into collages, particularly in the 1980s, often relied on ambiguities. "Nichts Neues" (Nothing New) is being released to coincide with the major retrospective at the MINSK Kunsthaus in Potsdam. Her typewritings, print graphics, collages, and paintings are illuminated in thematic episodes. Although Wolf-Rehfeldt stopped working artistically after the fall of the Berlin Wall, her art has lost none of its relevance. On the contrary: in a poetic, idiosyncratic, and often humorous way, the non-conformist artist addressed themes such as nature conservation, intellectual freedom, community, and communication. Her sometimes subtle, sometimes more striking play with words, meanings, and forms continues to reveal the unexpected.

RUTH WOLF-REHFELDT (b. 1932, Wurzen, Saxony) came to Berlin in 1950. Since the 1960s, as a self-taught artist, she created paintings, pastels, drawings, and from about 1970 onwards, so-called typewritings. From the GDR, she actively participated in the international Mail Art program. Only in recent years has she experienced a rediscovery – in 2017, with her typewritings, she was a newcomer and at the same time the oldest star of documenta 14.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0582/8948/8049/files/odoo_9783775754194_9511082f-7404-4fe8-9ba9-810d0a1685ef.jpg?v=1744288795
