64669-andrea-buettner
Andrea Büttner
In her artistic practice, Andrea Büttner combines art history with social and ethical issues. Since the early 2000s, the internationally renowned artist has created images on topics such as work, poverty, shame, and care in monastic forms of communal living, but also on crafts as a political field. To make these themes visible, which she repeatedly examines regarding their tension between aesthetics and ethics, she uses a wide array of artistic means of expression. Known for large-format woodcuts, Büttner has since expanded her artistic media to include a variety of others. These include, besides etchings, painting, photographs, among others, video installations, books, glass objects, and textiles. For exhibitions and publications, Büttner links her works into thematic groups and stages them as sensual "narratives" that can be successively explored.

ANDREA BÜTTNER (*1972, Stuttgart) studied Fine Arts, Philosophy, and Art History in Tübingen and Berlin, and received her PhD in 2010 on the relationship between shame and art at the Royal College of Art in London.
