64885-reena-saini-kallat
Reena Saini Kallat
Reena Saini Kallat explores geopolitical and geographical boundaries that shape the identity and self-perception of affected populations and their immediate environment. Exposing national borders as social and political constructs, her work addresses not only contested territorial boundaries but also social and psychological barriers. Her consistently ambiguous works always juxtapose a unifying component with the separating element. A central motif is barbed wire: yet Kallat creates this symbol of restricted freedom of movement from electrical cables, which enable exchange across borders. She creates hybrid creatures of flora and fauna that cannot be separated by the violent division of land between conflicting states, and she follows rivers that are both natural borders and lifelines to both banks. She powerfully reminds us of what humanity is (still) incapable of: peaceful and equal coexistence and a lived pluralism of cultures.

REENA SAINI KALLAT (*1973, Delhi) is one of the most important contemporary Indian artists. In 1996, she completed her painting studies in Mumbai, where she still lives today. In her drawings, sound installations, sculptures, photographs, and video works, the figure of the hybrid holds symbolic potential. Her own family was affected by the violent partition of India and Pakistan through displacement from Lahore. Her works are widely exhibited internationally, including at MoMA in New York and the Tate Modern in London.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0582/8948/8049/files/odoo_9783775754873_399f2da9-5157-4f95-8353-5cc72ca9a241.jpg?v=1744289107
