65294-philipp-fuerhofer
Philipp Fürhofer
Palm leaves, sunsets, forests – at the intersection of installation and painting, Philipp Fürhofer’s tropical landscapes oscillate between light and shadow in hybrid light boxes. The foliage emerges almost graphically, or details disappear behind semi-transparent surfaces. But the romantic view of nature is deceptive: beneath the cracked layers of his painting, the question of the existential, reciprocal influence of humanity and nature, of a capitalist civilization and the constant destruction of its own habitat, is revealed. The catalogue is published on the occasion of a focused solo exhibition at the Städel Museum in Frankfurt, which presents the latest works and a site-specific piece that creates a mystical jungle landscape in dialogue with the architectural and artistic elements of the space. A curatorial essay by Svenja Grosser and a conversation with opera critic Christine Lemke-Matwey contextualize the works within Fürhofer’s practice.

Artist and stage designer PHILIPP FÜRHFER (*1982, Augsburg) is internationally renowned for a body of work that uses acrylic glass, mirrors, and light to create highly aesthetic and subtly profound effects. His works are literally multi-layered: they are simultaneously image, sculpture, and light object. Fürhofer’s play with multidimensional illusion is also evident in the stage designs he created for the Bayreuth Festival or the opera houses of Amsterdam, London, and Copenhagen. He lives and works in Berlin.
