65415-simone-fattal
Simone Fattal
Shaped by her experiences of war and migration, Simone Fattal, like hardly any other artist of her generation, has transcended both media and geographical boundaries. In collages, she combines memorabilia from her private archive with historical turning points in the Arab world. Composed of individual parts and reassembled, these works suggest the fragility of an identity shaped by migration. Her rather abstract ceramic sculptures refer to ancient myths and archaeological finds. Accompanying the artist's first solo exhibition in Germany at Portikus in Frankfurt, Fattal's first comprehensive monograph will be published, combining essays by long-term companions with new academic contributions by international authors.

SIMONE FATTAL (b. 1942, Damascus) was born in Syria and grew up in Lebanon. After studying philosophy at the École des Lettres in Beirut and the Sorbonne in Paris, she returned to Beirut in 1969 and began to paint. In 1980, she fled the civil war and settled in California; today she lives in Paris. Most recently, exhibitions of her work were held at the Whitechapel Gallery, London, Bergen Konsthall, MoMA PS1, and the Musée Yves Saint Laurent Marrakesh.
