66324-gabriele-rothemann
Gabriele Rothemann
Gabriele Rothemann’s photographs do not simply depict something; they create something: a relationship to a long-past reality, a connection to unfamiliar times and spaces. Each image reverberates with the echo of other images, condensing a wealth of possibilities for how the world can be perceived and represented within the picture. Since 1984, she has used the medium of photography in a way that does not allow the subject in her images to become rigid, but rather imbues it with imaginary life. Her work revolves around existential questions – especially the fundamental question of all life: its finitude. Often abstracted yet simultaneously precise and richly detailed, her motifs, from Dead Animals to Miniatures to The Disappearance, acquire a haunting presence. In this way, the artist appeals to the empathy of her viewers and moves them not least with the sensual quality of her images, their clear visual language, and expressive beauty.

GABRIELE ROTHEMANN (*1960, Offenbach am Main) studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf with Fritz Schwegler and at the California Institute of the Arts, Los Angeles.
