66364-nick-brandt
Nick Brandt
As the third chapter of Nick Brandt's global series The Day May Break impressively visualizes the emerging reality that many island nations in the South Pacific are facing. The people in these photographs, taken off the coast of the Fiji Islands, represent the many who are threatened with losing their homes, their land, and their livelihoods as the water rises.
The images – all taken underwater with the camera – are hauntingly beautiful. But beyond the immediate visual impact, Brandt's shots go deeper: How did we get to this point? What does the future hold for the people of the Pacific Islands and other coastal regions of our Earth? Can we mitigate or even avert the damage? Brandt's empathetic yet powerful portraits give tangibility to the often abstract concept of climate change and serve as a reminder that behind every statistic about rising sea levels lies a human story.

NICK BRANDT (*1964, London) studied painting and film at St. Martin's School of Art in London. In 1992, he moved to California, where he still lives today. Since 2001, he has been documenting the destructive effects that humans have on nature and, by extension, on themselves. The first chapter of The Day May Break was recorded in Zimbabwe and Kenya in 2020. Chapter two was created in Bolivia in 2022. With the third chapter, Brandt introduces color into the series, thereby enhancing the all-encompassing power of water.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0582/8948/8049/files/odoo_9783775756730_e094c8b5-6cb6-4cae-bd40-f66e57384640.jpg?v=1744121963
