66426-pedro-wirz
Pedro Wirz
This book takes us into the artistic cosmos of the Brazilian-Swiss artist Pedro Wirz, where humans and animals, as well as creatures from legends, coexist. His exploration of the loss of biological, cultural, and ethnic diversity is based on scientific research, but also on his very personal experiences of a particularly threatened ecosystem. As the child of an agricultural scientist and a biologist, Wirz spent most of his youth in the tropical Vale do Paraíba in Brazil. To this day, his fascination with science, as well as indigenous mythologies, shapes his work.
He creates his sculptures and installations from a mixture of organic materials such as wax, earth, wood, clay, and straw, man-made artifacts, and objects from consumer culture such as toy cars, dolls, textile scraps, LEGO, old clothes, and electronic devices. Wirz is also interested in new, promising materials such as mushroom mycelium, bamboo, or nanomaterials. By combining paradoxical elements from the distant past and the foreseeable future, he creates a new connection between technological reality and poetic fantasy.

At the center of the artistic work of PEDRO WIRZ (*1981, Pindamonhangaba, Brazil) is the preoccupation with the coexistence of different species within an ecosystem. His works have been exhibited at institutions including Kunsthalle Basel, Palais de Tokyo, Hessel Museum of Art, Künstlerhaus Stuttgart, and Kunstverein Dortmund.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0582/8948/8049/files/odoo_9783775756778_8b3b459f-bf8b-40d8-99f9-ffeda33893fa.jpg?v=1744124765
