{"product_id":"66572-sanyu-his-life-and-complete-works-in-oil","title":"SANYU: His Life and Complete Works in Oil","description":"In 1921, Sanyu was part of the wave of Chinese students who left their homeland to study Western modernism abroad. In Paris, he attended courses at the liberal Académie de la Grande Chaumière, where he enthusiastically devoted himself to life drawing from models, which was impossible in China. Influenced by his training in Chinese calligraphy, his ink drawings are characterized by a unique fluidity in line work. At the suggestion of the writer and art collector Henri-Pierre Roché, he began oil painting in 1929. In contrast to his drawings, he often drew on memories from his youth in his oil paintings. After World War II, he traveled to New York, where he befriended the Swiss photographer Robert Frank. Although he did not turn to abstraction, he was influenced by the New York School and subsequently expanded his color palette. In 1950, he returned to Paris, where his life was marked by hopeful beginnings but also discouraging failures. This catalog raisonné is the first publication to compile all of his hitherto known oil paintings.","brand":"Hatje Cantz Verlag","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":49770499866888,"sku":"9783775756808","price":128.0,"currency_code":"EUR","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0582\/8948\/8049\/files\/odoo_9783775756808_fc85724e-a436-4d0e-bc11-a32b34690347.jpg?v=1745308676","url":"https:\/\/hatjecantz.de\/en\/products\/66572-sanyu-his-life-and-complete-works-in-oil","provider":"Hatje Cantz Verlag","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
