67014-elmgreen-dragset-spaces
Elmgreen & Dragset: Spaces
Elmgreen & Dragset. Spaces will be the first comprehensive publication to focus exclusively on the artist duo’s spatial installations. Since the beginning of their collaboration, Elmgreen & Dragset have challenged conventional exhibition spaces by transforming them into familiar environments that are unexpected within a gallery context. Among other projects, they have transformed the Nordic and Danish pavilions at the Venice Biennale into the homes of eccentric collectors, installed a swimming pool at London’s Whitechapel Gallery, and constructed a full-scale social housing block at ZKM Karlsruhe.

Populated with their sculptural works, these transformed environments offer an alternative to the "white cube" and allow visitors to complete the narrative fragments offered within. By juxtaposing exhibition spaces with incongruous settings or situations, the artists encourage visitors to examine the social, cultural, and political values embedded in everyday situations.

The catalog will be illustrated with images from Elmgreen & Dragset's past exhibitions, as well as from their solo exhibition at the Amorepacific Museum of Art, also titled Spaces. Three essays, an interview, and a chronology of past spatial transformations provide art historical context and an insightful overview of this important aspect of the artists' practice.

MICHAEL ELMGREEN (b. 1961, Copenhagen) and INGAR DRAGSET (b. 1969, Trondheim) live in Berlin and have been working together as an artist duo since 1995. They have received several awards, including the Nationalgalerie Prize in Berlin in 2002 and a Special Mention for their exhibition The Collectors in the Danish and Nordic Pavilions at the 53rd Venice Biennale in 2009.
