67016-james-howell-painting-malerei
James Howell: Painting | Painting
The American painter James Howell found the subject of his art in the color gray, whose sensual diversity of appearance he explored with great dedication for decades. In 2022, the Josef Albers Museum in Bottrop dedicated an exhibition to Howell, presenting his paintings in the context of Albers' work. The catalog presents this impressive encounter with reproductions of works and installation shots. They show Howell's paintings in all their conceptual depth, which extends beyond the apparent monotheism of the color gray. They are exercises on the relationship between color and light, based on a refinement of painterly means to create a paradoxical emphasis of expression despite extreme reduction.

JAMES HOWELL (1935–2014) was an American artist who dedicated more than five decades of his life to infinite shades of gray. From 1968, he primarily created abstract paintings, which he regularly exhibited on the West Coast of the USA. In 1983, he moved into a studio on San Juan Island, WA, where he was surrounded by the changing grays of sky, water, and light. This undoubtedly influenced his artistic creation. In 1992, he moved to New York, where he developed his own style in the 1990s with Series 10. This series on shades of gray reflected his interests in mathematics, physics, and philosophy. The artist's works go beyond mere color and speak of the interconnectedness of all things.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0582/8948/8049/files/odoo_9783775757249_21b91bba-3059-4d50-a23f-1621ecb699b0.jpg?v=1744101934
