67281-maarten-van-heemskerck
Maarten van Heemskerck
Between 1532 and 1536/37, the Dutch artist Maarten van Heemskerck traveled to Rome. Most of the drawings made there come from a sketchbook that he filled with motifs during his wanderings and whose original binding is now lost. Recent art-technological investigations at the Berlin Kupferstichkabinett allowed for the extensive reconstruction of the original order of the book pages. This forms the basis of the present facsimile. In fascinating studies, van Heemskerck captured ancient sculptures and ruins as well as cityscapes. In doing so, he demonstrated a particular flair for compositions and perspectives as well as the highest drawing sensitivity. In the sketchbook, the artist found his personal experimental field and at the same time created a valuable treasure trove of motifs.

This book is also available in English.

TATJANA BARTSCH has been deputy head of the photographic archive of the Bibliotheca Hertziana – Max Planck Institute for Art History since 2011.

CHRISTIEN MELZER has been curator for Dutch and English art before 1800 at the Kupferstichkabinett of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin since 2020.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0582/8948/8049/files/odoo_9783775757881_e46ceee6-37ca-4afd-adf6-12acf48c7dca.jpg?v=1744292251
