After training as a musician (violin), he began his acting career in East Berlin. With numerous theater and film roles (including in Königskinder, Nackt unter Wölfen, and Jakob der Lügner), he was one of the most popular actors in the GDR. As a co-signer of the petition against the expatriation of Wolf Biermann, he received no further engagements from 1976 onwards, left the GDR in 1980, and successfully continued his career not only in West Germany but also internationally.
