With a career spanning seven decades, she is one of the most significant abstract artists of the post-war period, and this is the first comprehensive monograph dedicated to her. Keserü's painting combines elements of Hungarian folk culture with motifs from European modernism. Through her organic-abstract style in bold colors and forms, she distanced herself in the 1950s, the time of the Hungarian Uprising, from the state-mandated Socialist Realism. In the following decade, Keserü began to experiment with different materials and techniques. Motifs alluding to her female identity increasingly came to the forefront – even before and independently of the emerging second-wave feminism. The luminous colors of her sensual abstractions were always the result of scientific and artistic experiments.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIlona Keserü (born 1933 in Pécs, Hungary) initially worked as an illustrator after graduating from the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest in 1958. From the mid-1960s, she participated in important exhibitions of the so-called Iparterv generation and also worked as a stage and costume designer. Since 1983, she taught at the University of Pécs and founded the master school for fine arts there. Her works have been and are represented in numerous exhibitions and collections, including Women in Abstraction at the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris (2021).
