Complimented by contributions on photography, the Städel Museum’s collection of modern art presents a concentrated and select survey of the development of the history of European painting and sculpture in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The museum houses a number of major works from recent art history, including paintings such as Claude Monet’s The Luncheon, Edgar Degas’s Orchestra Musicians, Pablo Picasso’s Fernande Olivier, Franz Marc’s Dog Lying in the Snow and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner’s Standing Nude with Hat. In addition to world-renowned masterpieces of Realism, Impressionism, Symbolism, and Expressionism, the collection also particularly thrives on the surprises which lesser-known works outside of the standard canon have to offer. In this expanded and revised edition, around 300 major paintings, sculptures, and photographs are presented, including numerous pieces that have only entered the Städel’s collection in recent years.
The aim was already formulated at the last Venice Biennale: "to create a common place in a common time" - but the pavilions of the individual countries once again proved to be mutually isolated islands. This aim will now be realised at the 48th Venice Biennale in 1999 in the official contribution for the Danish pavilion by American Jason Rhoades and the Danish artist Peter Bonde. For the first time in the history of this art event, the representatives of two nations will create a common cultural and artistic space. The Snowball documents this joint project, in which the artists will transform the pavilion into a stock-car course with American stock cars, sound effects and film projections. Rhoades and Bonde see the multimedia installation as a work in progress that will already be created in the run-up to the Biennale in dialogue with artists, writers, academics and sponsors, and will be continued in creative cooperation beyond the art exhibition - in other places and with other people.
Emil Schumacher (1912–1999) was part of the new departure in art after 1945, a generation of artists that debated Bauhaus dogmas and sought the free expressiveness of Informal Art, aspiring to the materiality of the painting and its violation in an act of destruction.
In the fifties, Schumacher’s paintings began attracting international interest, as testified to by his participation in documenta II and III in

In his wonderfully ambiguous One Minute Sculptures, which are only humorous at first glance, Erwin Wurm takes a literal approach to sculpture while also deconstructing it. On the one hand, his Fat Car and Fat House are spirited, thoughtful critiques of consumer culture, but they are also simple to comprehend. Wurm coolly manipulates and deforms his seemingly melancholy protagonists, their paradoxical actions, grotesque grimaces, and strained poses giving rise to fundamental questions concerning normality and the meaning or the lack of it in both artistic conventions and human actions.
Anyone who knows Wurm’s work looks forward to and enjoys every new work produced by the Vienna-based artist. This informative monograph offers many new, previously unpublished videos, sculptures, installations, and performances. Wurm’s profoundly humane art is an eye-opener to social forces, always leaving room for alternative or playful interpretations.

Four legendary artists who have never been exhibited together before are united for the first time in the Goetz Collection: Gotthard Graubner (1930–2013), Imi Knoebel (*1940), Blinky Palermo (1943–1977), and Reiner Ruthenbeck (1937–2016). Each one is connected to the renowned Düsseldorf Akademie, and each has explored, in his own way, within the creative space of abstraction. These artists are distinguished by their pleasure for experimentation with the picture frame, materials, color, and space. The exhibition and accompanying catalogue offer opportunities to focus on individual artworks by the quadrumvirate, as well as to engage in a dialogue that examines both their varying approaches and shared commonalities.

Willi Baumeister is considered one of the protagonists of 20th- century art history. The development of his work as well as the course of artistic career, from training under Adolf Hölzel in Stuttgart, the professorship at the Städelschule in Frankfurt up to his role as a champion of abstract art in the reconstruction phase of the post-war period and his task as a stimulating teacher at the Art Academy are documented in this detailed, extensive monograph. In addition to a large section of colored pictures, this meticulously edited biography provides the most up- to-date collection of material. Consequently this book will become an indispensable item in the library of anyone who is interested in art.
Modern art used to be primarily equated with acceleration, from William Turner to Futurism, from the abstract and the kinetic to media-generated art. On the other hand, little attention has been paid to the fact that the fascination with speed has always been combined with a search for the aesthetics of deceleration, something that would explore the dynamics of rest and the depths of existences, starting with the images of yearning produced by the Romantics to the profound “slow painting” by artists such as Mark Rothko or Franz Gertsch. This is the first volume to examine this modern dialectic, condensing a theme that hits a social nerve. Well-known authors, such as sociologist Hartmut Rosa and cultural scientist Hartmut Böhme, discuss the problems of technology- and economy-based acceleration and the increasing need to slow down. The 300 SL (W 194) is the first racing car with which Mercedes-Benz renewed its participation in international automobile racing in the postwar period. Top-ranking positions and triumphs, such as at the legendary twenty-four-hour endurance race in Le Mans or the Carrera Panamericana in Mexico, are not a long time in the coming and as early as 1952 secure a place for the Stuttgart-based make in the worldwide motor sports scene. The racing car achieved particular fame for its unusual gull-winged doors, which turn the production sports car 300 SL, introduced in 1954 and directly derived from the W 194, into one of the lasting icons in automobile history. The book provides exhaustive and authentic documentation of the technical development of the W 194 based on extensive research in the archives of Mercedes-Benz Classic: all of the races as well as the biography of each individual vehicle are presented with the aid of in part unpublished images and illustrations. Its high-quality design as well as its exquisite features make the book a true collector’s item. (English edition ISBN 978-3-7757-4003-6)
Women artists in Mexico present their lifeworld from a decidedly female point of view and respond to international artistic movements with very different approaches: works by Teresa Serrano (*1936), Ximena Cuevas (*1963), Betsabeé Romero (*1963), Teresa Margolles (*1963), Claudia Fernández (*1965), Melanie Smith (*1965), and Maruch Sántiz Gómez (*1975) constitute the core of this publication. The photographs, videos, objects, and installations from the holdings of the Daros Latinamerica Collection in Zurich take a subversive look at Mexico’s national identity. The works call prevailing hierarchies of power into question, including their associated traditional functions as well as the social spaces of women within Mexican society. The apparent banality of everyday things and actions—both in the domestic-private as well as the urban-public sphere—experiences new, deeper meaning and is in part ironically broken.

They devote themselves to the veneer of modern everyday life, the mirrored world of surfaces. Reflective shop windows, limousines with shiny chrome, garishly colored plastic kitsch, and urban scenes have been the favorite subjects of the Photorealists for fifty years. In a complicated work process, the artists employ technical aids to create painted illusions: they photograph their source materials, transfer them with the aid of slide projectors or scans, and then capture them precisely with the brush or spray gun on canvas. This publication presents the impressive works of art by leading figures in this movement, starting with sixties artists such as Richard Estes, Chuck Close, and Don Eddy and moving through three generations of artists to the hyper-realistic visual experiences of contemporary digital artists such as Yigal Ozeri, Raphaella Spence, and Robert Neffson.(English edition ISBN 978-3-7757-3585-8)

Dennis Hopper, one of Hollywood's last great cult figures, is mostly known for his depiction of social outcasts in films such as "Rebel Without A Cause" or "Apocalypse Now", but also as the director of classic films like "Easy Rider" or "Out of the Blue". Yet, Hopper also made a name for himself as an artist and photographer. His photographic chronicle of America in the sixties, a decade marked by awakening and rebellion and documented by Hopper in forceful black-and-white pictures, has by now become legendary. A System of Moments, a kaleidoscopic documentation of painting, photography, film and life, is the first comprehensive publication that takes into account the diverse activities of Dennis Hopper's career of almost fifty years, the subtle connection of individual genres. For the first time, recent photographic works, which emerged after a long creative break in the nineties, are also presented: large- format, more or less abstract pictures featuring urbane motifs, weirdly threatening clippings from graffiti-clad walls or dense textural pictures in rich colour shades with almost tactile surfaces. The artist: Dennis Hopper, born 1936 in Dodge City, USA. In 1953, his first important role as an actor in "Johnny Guitar". In 1969, breakthrough as a director with his first film "Easy Rider", which was jointly written by Hopper and Peter Fonda. Since 1961, numerous exhibitions in galleries and museums, among them a great retrospective in The Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Exhibition Schedule: MAK - Österreichisches Museum für angewandte Kunst, Vienna 30.5.-7.10.2001
