    George Byrne. Post Truth

Turning what architect Rem Koolhaas famously referred to as “junkspace”, the spatial flotsam of the Anthropocene, into candy-coloured dreamscapes, George Byrne depicts the gritty urbanism of Los Angeles in sublime otherworldliness. Arriving a decade ago, the Australian artist was immediately enthralled by the sprawling cityscape, mesmerized by the way the sunlight transformed it into two-dimensional, almost painterly abstractions, underpinned by a distinctive pastel color palette. Extending his practice beyond the confines of the lens by extracting elements from various images, his series Post Truth dwells in the liminal space between real and imagined. Reassembling the urban landscape into striking, ascetic collages of color and geometric fragments, Byrne creates postmodernist oases in the metropolis that masterfully harness the malleability of the photographic medium. Byrne’s compositions evoke associations with Miami Beach’s Art Deco, the Memphis Group’s designs, as well as the work of David Hockney or Ed Ruscha, and at the same time tap into the specific aesthetics of today’s visual culture played out on Instagram. They are filled with a sense of suspended reality—and never fail to convey a feeling of joy.

Born in Sydney in 1976, GEORGE BYRNE graduated from Sydney College of the Arts in 2001, and traveled extensively before settling in Los Angeles in 2010. Today, he is internationally recognized for his large-scale photographs shot with medium-format film. Byrne has exhibited internationally and is currently represented by galleries in Sydney, Shanghai, Los Angeles, Toronto, Vancouver, Oslo, Mumbai and Taipei. In 2020, he was named the Minimalist Photographer of the Year.

    Lovis Corinth. Then came Berlin!
The importance of Lovis Corinth (1858–1925) for modern art can hardly be overstated. Even during his lifetime, the painter was one of the most significant figures in the Berlin art scene. Born and raised in Tapiau, East Prussia, he moved from Munich to the imperial capital in 1900. At that time, Berlin was already significantly more progressive than the Bavarian residential city. "It only started in Berlin," Corinth is said to have commented on his success story on the Spree.

The exhibition and catalogue focus on Corinth's career and his great influence on the city's art scene, but also on his formative private environment. Less known topics also show how modern the artist painted, lived, and thought: Corinth's painting school, where he primarily taught women, and his work for the Berlin theater.

Lovis Corinth (1858–1925) is one of the most important representatives of German Impressionism. Born in East Prussia, the painter studied in Königsberg, Munich, and Paris before rising to become a leading figure of the Berlin Secession. His extensive oeuvre ranges from portraits to nudes and landscapes. At the beginning of the 20th century, he became one of the most important representatives of modern art.

“Fair to cloudy” is a prognostication regularly made on the evening weather report, promising everything and nothing. Homeland—what is it, and how do you recognize or identify it? Three young photographers travel across the country searching for what is “typically German,” something that is both fascinating and disconcerting to them. On their journey from Husum to Donaueschingen they take a serene and self-ironic look at life in the provinces, with all of its peculiarities and unquestioned traditions, which puts a smile on everyone’s face. This raises the question of whether there might be something of all this in us, too. These amusing photos are accompanied by a foreword by Frank Goosen, who, with no less wit, traces German lives and superficialities in an historical survey from the 1960s to the present day.

DAVID CARREÑO HANSEN (*1978, Madrid), SVEN STOLZENWALD (*1986, Neuss), and CHRISTIAN A. WERNER (*1980, Weimar) met at the Hochschule Hannover, where they were all studying documentary photography. Heiter bis wolkig is their collaborative final exam project. Besides working as freelance photographers, all of them are busy with (social) documentary photography projects. The author FRANK GOOSEN (*1966, Bochum) travels on the lecture circuit all over Germany, generally by train.

    Sieh dir die Menschen an!
Whether in fine art, literature, cinema, science, or fashion – in the crises following World War I, the fascination with types was based on a societal impulse. People sought new role models and, quite immodestly, the "face of the time," as shown by the New Objectivity portraits of Otto Dix, George Grosz, Jeanne Mammen, and Hanna Nagel. Many of the stereotypical ideas, for example, about the "New Woman" or the "worker" (male and female), continue to resonate today, reminding us with their classification of individuals of a problem that also persists in contemporary forms of discrimination.
The broad spectrum of contributions from art-historical, medical-historical, media studies, and sociological perspectives impressively demonstrates this. An installation by the artist Cemile Sahin, born in 1990, developed specifically for the exhibitions, builds a bridge to the present.

    Dürer für Berlin
The collection of Albrecht Dürer's drawings and prints in the Berlin Kupferstichkabinett is one of the most important worldwide. Featuring 130 works, including masterpieces such as the Apocalypse or the portrait of Dürer's mother, the eventful history of the collection itself is now presented: from the beginnings of the Berlin Cabinet in 1831, through the Gründerzeit and National Socialism, to the division of the holdings and their reunification in 1994. The catalog highlights the cultural-historical significance of Dürer's staging for national identity formation and a "Dürer scandal" in 1871, which triggered one of the first academic attribution controversies in German art history in the founding year of the German Empire. Through spectacular acquisitions, which propelled the Kupferstichkabinett's collection to its current world-class status, it was rehabilitated, Dürer's work was made accessible for research, and milestones in art reproduction were set. This catalog offers insights into Berlin's treasured repository.

ALBRECHT DÜRER (1471–1528, Nuremberg) is one of the most significant artists of all time in the German-speaking world. He lived at the turn of the Late Gothic and Renaissance periods and profoundly shaped both epochs: the Late Gothic as an innovative master, the Renaissance as a curious, creative, and influential co-creator. His extensive oeuvre includes more than 100 engravings, approx. 250 woodcuts, and more than 1000 drawings.

    Short Messages

The prominently visible Church of the Redeemer on the shores of Jungfernsee near Sacrow holds a treasure that has yet to be fully uncovered: its blue tiled frieze contains numerous messages for eternity. Who inscribed "Carpe Diem" here in 1942? Who carved "We stood here many a night and no one thought of us"?
On the blue glazed, flower-shaped tiles of the Church of the Redeemer in Sacrow, built by Ludwig Persius in 1844, 150 years of German history are condensed into short messages. Written in German, English, or Russian, inscribed in Sütterlin or Latin script, they range from everyday doodles to historical milestones from the Second World War or divided Germany.
Short Messages offers a chronicle of these unique inscriptions that is as detailed as it is charming. Documented in photographs by Lars Wiedemann, the magic of this place is narrated through texts by Angelika Kaltenbach and actor Hanns Zischler.

Michael Werner is one of the most internationally influential gallery owners of the post-war period. His first exhibition in 1963 caused a scandal, as did many thereafter. But for him, it was never about provocation for its own sake, but always about the possibilities of art to resist rigid structures and assert its own reality.

In this book, Werner tells of his childhood during World War II and the struggles of finding his way. He reports on artists with whom he worked, argued, failed spectacularly, and achieved great successes. His accounts, together with photographs and documents, not only form an impressive contemporary testimony, but also show that the artistic tensions that emerged back then are far from fully explored.

Michael Werner, born in 1939, is a German art dealer and gallery owner. His gallery Michael Werner, now based in Berlin and which, over the course of his long career, was also represented in Cologne, London, New York, Paris, and Athens, is one of the most internationally influential galleries in post-war history. With it, he sustainably established artists such as Georg Baselitz, A. R. Penck, Markus Lüpertz, Jörg Immendorff, Per Kirkeby, Marcel Broodthaers, and Sigmar Polke.

Nils Emmerichs, born in 1988, studied art history and philosophy in Düsseldorf, Basel, and Karlsruhe. He earned his doctorate on the influence of visual arts on Heiner Müller's work. For the Kunsthalle Bielefeld, he supervised and curated exhibitions by Michael Majerus, Olaf Nicolai, and Andreas Schulze, and conceived a series of events with Rosemarie Trockel. As an author and editor, he has published texts on Marcel Odenbach, Leiko Ikemura, Ulrich Rückriem, and A. R. Penck, among others.

“She, a woman of high beauty, created like no other to be Medea, Madonna, Iphigenia, Aspasia, decided one sunny winter day to escape her loneliness and to leave La Rotonda. Unconcerned by all conventions, Blumenschein adored transformation: in a distinctive, avant-garde aesthetic, the two women embraced various different identities and challenged many norms, in the process revealing the performativity of gender. Initiating a dialog between the two artists’ perspectives, these books bring together for the first time Blumenschein’s drawings with Ottinger’s photographs from their joint performance sessions.

    Alexander von Reiswitz. Catching Strangers
The book combines photography and literature in a unique project. Over a period of 15 years, photographer Alexander von Reiswitz photographed randomly selected individuals in various countries and cultures on four continents who happened to be in the same place at the same time, portraying them as supposed families in staged family portraits. These chance encounters stimulate new, fictional narratives. Renowned writers were invited to develop stories based on the photographs and to ascribe imaginary family relationships and destinies to the depicted individuals. At the heart of the project is chance, which both creates special moments in photography and brings people together or makes them miss each other in life.

    Stefanie Bürkle: Atelier + Labor

Whether in works of art or in scientific research, only the results of the creative process have been visible in both art and science. What happens behind closed doors in labs and studios remains as invisible as it is mysterious. The Berlin-based artist and professor of visual arts Stefanie Bürkle (*1966) has now taken on these unfamiliar sites of creation by photographing laboratories and art studios throughout Berlin. Her photographs feature deserted spaces for development and thought, full of materials, tools, experiments, and set-ups whose purposes remain hidden from viewers, which nevertheless allow us to imagine great things. Stefanie Bürkle’s photographs are, in a certain way, about the alchemists’ labs of the present time. They explore the analogies between experimentation and process in both the studio and the laboratory, making it possible for us all to see these workshops of knowledge for the first time.

Franz Marc: Die Suche nach einer besseren Welt
Franz Marc's work fascinates with its vibrant colors and deep connection to nature, particularly evident in his depictions of animals. Although the artist lived a rather secluded life, he was not a loner, but built an extensive network spanning Paris, Berlin, and Munich. Together with Wassily Kandinsky, he co-founded the editorial collective "Der Blaue Reiter" (The Blue Rider) and became a passionate pioneer of modern art. His work, created between 1904 and 1914, evolved towards cubist dissolution of form; with the outbreak of the First World War, his creative endeavors came to an abrupt end.

The catalog traces the journey of a seeker who, in an era marked by a belief in progress, yearned for a spiritual space beyond technology. Published for Franz Marc's first monographic exhibition in over twenty years, this publication offers a comprehensive insight into the work of this extraordinary artist.

FRANZ MARC (1880–1916) is considered one of the most important painters of German Expressionism. His study of literature and linguistics and his bilingual upbringing by his French mother shaped him, as did his intensive engagement with the art of his time.
