Caribbean, titled Birds of the West Indies. Ian Fleming, an active bird watcher living in Jamaica, subsequently appropriated the name for his novel’s lead character. He found it to be perfectly “ordinary”, “brief”, “Anglo-Saxon” and “masculine”. This co-opting of names was the first replacement in a series of substitutions that would become central to the construction of the Bond narrative. In a meticulous and comprehensive dissection of the Bond films, artist Taryn Simon (*1975 in New York) inventoried women, weapons and vehicles in Bond. The contents of these categories function as essential accessories to the narrative’s myth of the seductive, powerful, and invincible western male. In Birds of the West Indies, Simon presents a visual database of interchangeable variables used in the production of fantasy, through which she examines the economic and emotional value generated by their repetition.

    Endangered Sky
It is estimated that one in eight bird species is threatened with extinction due to climate change, illegal trade and habitat loss resulting from intensive agriculture and urbanisation. Sean Scully and Kelly Grovier counter this with moving duets of poems and drawings, each dedicated to the individual beauty of a single bird species. Scully's imagery, at once thoughtful and emphatic, geometric and free-flowing, captures the essence of these feathered creatures. This first series of iPhone drawings showcases Scully's distinctive style, yet also reveals a new intimacy, playfulness and exuberance of gestures, colours and forms. Together, Grovier and Scully evoke a sense of loss from which empathy grows: "Hope," as Emily Dickinson wrote, "is the thing with feathers that perches in the soul."

SEAN SCULLY (born 1945, Dublin) is one of the most renowned artists of his generation. In addition to numerous exhibitions worldwide, he has been honoured with important awards such as the Guggenheim Fellowship and the Harkness Fellowship.

In 1936, an American ornithologist named James Bond published the definitive taxonomy Birds of the West Indies. Ian Fleming, an active bird-watcher living in Jamaica, appropriated the name for his novel’s lead character. He found it “flat and colourless,” a fitting choice for a character intended to be “anonymous. . . a blunt instrument in the hands of the government.”
    In
Field Guide to Birds of the West Indies, Taryn Simon (*1975) casts herself as James Bond (1900–1989) the ornithologist, and identifies, photographs, and classifies all the birds that appear within the twenty-four films of the James Bond franchise. The appearance of many of the birds was unplanned and virtually undetected, operating as background noise for whatever set they happened to fly into. Simon’s ornithological discoveries occupy a liminal space—confined within the fiction of the James Bond universe and yet wholly separate from it. This taxonomy of 331 birds is a precise consideration of a new nature found in an alternate reality.

Since her youth, Rebecca Raue has been concerned with how art can be brought closer to children. After studying with renowned artists Georg Baselitz and Rebecca Horn, she founded the NGO Ephra in Berlin, which aims to promote children through contemporary art. Her latest project is the book Thoughts Play Hide and Seek, which serves as an immersive journey through an exhibition of the same name in Berlin in 2023. The long-term project emerged from years of studio visits with primary school children and features works by artists such as Thomás Saraceno, Ólafur Elíasson, Paula Anke, Jeppe Hein and many others.

Over the years, Rebecca Raue has accompanied thousands of children to artist studios and shown them that art can be a space for thought for everyone. In doing so, she introduced the concept of the Body Map, where children lie down on a large piece of paper, trace their outlines, and then fill them with personal information such as their dreams, favorite foods, and future plans. This method promotes children's creativity and self-confidence. Raue is convinced that art contributes to a happier and healthier life and follows the philosophy of understanding art as a space for thought that should be made accessible to as large and, ideally, as young an audience as possible.

EPHRA is an NGO based in Berlin, founded by artist Rebecca Raue. It focuses on promoting children through contemporary art. The exhibition Thoughts Play Hide and Seek is the result of many years of studio visits with primary school children.

The Day May Break, photographed in Zimbabwe and Kenya in late 2020, is the first part of a global series portraying people and animals that have been impacted by environmental degradation and destruction. The people in the photos were all affected by climate change, displaced by cyclones and years-long droughts. Photographed at five sanctuaries, the animals were rescues that can never be re-wilded. As a result, it was safe for human strangers to be close to them, photographed so close to them, within the same frame. The fog on location is the unifying visual, as we increasingly find ourselves in a kind of limbo, a once-recognizable world now fading from view. However, in spite of their loss, these people and animals are the survivors. And therein lies possibility and hope.

NICK BRANDT (*1964) studied film and painting at St. Martin’s in London. He turned to photography in 2001 with his trilogy On This Earth, A Shadow Falls, Across the Ravage Land. His more recent bodies of work / books are Inherit the Dust (2016) and This Empty World (2019). He lives in California.

In the 1990s, queer youth, social outcasts, and artists flocked to San Francisco to experiment with art, style, identity, and gender. Affordable rents paved the way for queer bars, clubs, tattoo shops, galleries, cafes, bookstores, and women-owned businesses. A new wave of feminism was open to exploring gender identities, and butch/femme culture experienced a peak. The Mission District became the center of this scene, characterized by a strong sense of community. Chloe Sherman was both a member of this community and its passionate chronicler. Her documentary photography on 35mm film captures the vibrancy, tenderness, individuality, and resilience within this subculture, often scorned by mainstream society. Her first monograph captures the rebellious spirit of that time and offers an unvarnished portrait of a groundbreaking era.

CHLOE SHERMAN (b. 1969, New York) came to San Francisco in 1991 to study fine art photography at the San Francisco Art Institute. Her work has been exhibited internationally and published in magazines such as Rolling Stone and Interview. Her documentary photography is strongly influenced by her artistic training.

“Fair to cloudy” is a prognostication regularly made on the evening weather report, promising everything and nothing. Homeland—what is it, and how do you recognize or identify it? Three young photographers travel across the country searching for what is “typically German,” something that is both fascinating and disconcerting to them. On their journey from Husum to Donaueschingen they take a serene and self-ironic look at life in the provinces, with all of its peculiarities and unquestioned traditions, which puts a smile on everyone’s face. This raises the question of whether there might be something of all this in us, too. These amusing photos are accompanied by a foreword by Frank Goosen, who, with no less wit, traces German lives and superficialities in an historical survey from the 1960s to the present day.

DAVID CARREÑO HANSEN (*1978, Madrid), SVEN STOLZENWALD (*1986, Neuss), and CHRISTIAN A. WERNER (*1980, Weimar) met at the Hochschule Hannover, where they were all studying documentary photography. Heiter bis wolkig is their collaborative final exam project. Besides working as freelance photographers, all of them are busy with (social) documentary photography projects. The author FRANK GOOSEN (*1966, Bochum) travels on the lecture circuit all over Germany, generally by train.

    David Hockney

This catalogue for the exhibition at Kunstmuseum Luzern covers the entire oeuvre of the outstanding British artist David Hockney. With more than 80 paintings, drawings, and prints, this life’s work spans Hockney’s London student years, the 1960s in Los Angeles, the reorientation of his painting in the 1980s, a decade of Yorkshire landscapes, and his most recent, monumental iPad drawings. These works from the Tate’s collection form the magical essence of this vast oeuvre, including the double portraits My Parents and Mr and Mrs Clark and Percy, or the iconic A Bigger Splash. The essays illuminate Hockney’s socialization in the young queer culture of 1960s England; personal contributions and recollections by Frank Gehry, Marieke Lucas Rijneveld, Ed Ruscha, Christine Streuli, or Ali Smith mark Hockney’s great significance for contemporary everyday culture.

DAVID HOCKNEY (*1937) spent his childhood in Yorkshire. During his studies at the Royal College of Art, he first attracted public attention in 1961. Since then he has advanced to become one of the most important contemporary artists. In addition to painting, he works as a draftsman, graphic artist, stage designer and photographer.

    Female Photographers Org

A visual dialogue about bodies and how they are perceived in media has been undertaken by the Female Photographers Org collective. As the group’s first publication, The Body Issue addresses the depiction of bodies and the perception of them; at the same time, it also launches a series of photo books. Founded in 2018, Female Photographers Org will regularly publish photography books devoted to issues, while also organizing companion exhibitions under its own direction. The goal is to increase the visibility of female photographers, since women are still underrepresented in the art world. Female Photographers Org is aiming to change this situation and calls upon women to reinforce their positions collectively. The Body Issue also invites guest artists to publish their work in the collective’s books, so that they can literally experience solidarity among women.

FEMALE PHOTOGRAPHERS ORG is a democratically organized collective founded in 2018 by KIRSTEN BECKEN and VERONIKA FAUSTMANN. Since then, more than twenty female photographers have joined its ranks. The Body Issue, the first volume in this series, has been funded by a Kickstarter campaign.

    Jean-Luc Mylayne

Jean-Luc Mylayne (born in 1946) has spent his life projecting himself into the world to photograph “the bird” in rural settings where he invests weeks, sometimes months, to achieve the composition he seeks. The Fondation Vincent van Gogh Arles presents an ensemble of thirty-nine works, created between 1979 and 2008, organized into nine chapters according to their relationship to light and to location, and playing from the start on the gradual invasion of the azure blue sky. Printed as a single original, each photograph is silent about the place it was taken, but in stating its dates, underlines the length of time needed to gain access to the other that is the bird. The bird is not the photograph’s only object: it is the pretext and the witness.

    Armin Mueller-Stahl

Armin Mueller-Stahl, the world-famous German actor, has also long been known as a gifted poet and painter. After the successful Die Blaue Kuh (The Blue Cow), his new, large volume Der wien Vogel fliegen kann features another one of Mueller-Stahl’s political poems, which the artist joins with expressive painting to create a powerful overall composition.

The first part of the poem, which is laced with innuendo, dates from the year 1968. As a metaphor for a life behind the Wall during the East German era, it brought the artist trouble with the GDR’s Ministry of State Security. The second part, which traces an arc from German history to dictatorships all over the world, was written in 2016 and will be published for the first time in this book. Together with the partly figurative, partly abstract works of art Mueller-Stahl adds to each line, words and images combine to make a very personal comment on the current state of the world.

The Fondation Beyeler is dedicating an exhibition to this global phenomenon, featuring landscape paintings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries from Scandinavia, Finland, and Canada. In addition to works by renowned painters such as Edvard Munch, Akseli Gallen-Kallela, and Hilma af Klint, it also presents paintings by artists who are highly respected in their home countries but, unjustly, have remained practically unknown in Central Europe. Finally, the Nordic visual worlds of Harald Sohlberg, Gustaf Fjæstad, Emily Carr, Tom Thomson, and Prince Eugen of Sweden will be introduced to a broad audience. Lars Eidinger. Who's there?
"Who's there?" is the third book in a trilogy of photo books, following "Autistic Disco" and "O Mensch," all centered on the human condition. "Who's there?" is the question posed at the beginning of William Shakespeare's Hamlet. Then, man, as a representative, enters the stage and asks the essential question of to be or not to be. When Hamlet holds up the skull of the deceased court jester Yorick, it is a gesture of self-reflection. The fool gazes at the fool.

Captured with a smartphone and a DSLR camera, Lars Eidinger's new photographs were taken in locations such as Tokyo, Kyoto, Shanghai, Istanbul, Berlin, London, Tehran, Sydney, and Paris. They are accompanied by a text from Peter Sloterdijk.

Lars Eidinger (*1976) is one of the most distinguished actors in film and on stage. As a DJ or as an interpreter of Bertolt Brecht's "Hauspostille," he fills venues nationwide. They fascinate us today as they did 500 years ago: elaborate compositions of exotic fruits or platters with oysters, foral arrangements and skulls, exquisitely decorated musical instruments and scientific instruments. Magical things testify to exuberant wealth and hedonism as well as to the enlightened curiosity and religious fervor of the Baroque era. This lavishly illustrated book that even features a pictorial glossary sets the stage for the internationally renowned collection of still lifes housed in Dresden’s Gemäldegalerie (Picture Gallery). Focusing on the dazzling masterpieces of Dutch and Flemish painting, this book examines the genre in all its diverse facets. What meaning, what content, and what function did still lifes have, what allegories and symbols are concealed in their coded messages? How did the artists take the game of optical illusion to extremes? More than 70 still lifes from the Dresden collection by painters such as Cornelis de Heem, Abraham Mignon, Rachel Ruysch, and Frans Snyders provide a unique insight into the golden age of this magical genre.

    Zac Langdon-Pole's Art Journey

Zac Langdon-Pole’s Art Journey Constellations has taken him across a world that humans and birds have been navigating through millennia. He followed the flight paths of birds like the white stork or the arctic tern, traveling along the earth’s axis where the Northern and Southern Hemispheres’ summers intersect. Migrating birds cover some of the longest distances traveled by any living being. Their routes have guided the Polynesian pathfinders across the seas. Inspired by this ancient celestial tracing, the artist questions the position of humans as the center of the world. Weaving through Central Europe, Southern Africa, and the Pacific Islands of Samoa and Hawaii, he seeks to understand how culture intersects with the science of celestial mapping—and from there flows into larger existential inquiries about who we are and how we are situated in the world.

ZAC LANGDON-POLE (*1988, New Zealand) graduated from the University of Auckland, Elam School of Fine Arts and studied with Willem the Rooij at the Städelschule in Frankfurt/Main, Germany. The recipient of the Charlotte-Prinz Scholarship exhibited in Canada, Singapore, and Germany. He lives in Darmstadt and Berlin, Germany.

    Milkyways
Milkyways is a collection of essays in which artist Camille Henrot explores the ambivalence of motherhood and the process of creation, both in art and in life. Each chapter opens up a cosmos of references to literature, cartoons, art history, and psychoanalysis – from Greek mythology to Marcel Proust and Hélène Cixous. Alongside reproductions of Henrot's paintings, drawings, and sculptures, her texts oscillate freely between the personal and the social, the obvious and the complex, the unconsciously instinctive and the utterly mundane.

Milkyways was originally conceived at the invitation of Antje Stahl for the magazine Republik and written in collaboration with Jacob Bromberg, Antje Stahl, and Léa Trudel.

CAMILLE HENROT (b. 1978, Paris) is considered one of the most influential voices in contemporary art. Her practice spans drawing, painting, sculpture, installation, and film. Inspired by references from literature, psychoanalysis, cultural anthropology, and the banality of everyday life, she questions what it means to be both a private individual and a global subject in an increasingly interconnected and overstimulated world. Henrot has had numerous solo exhibitions worldwide, including at the Middelheim Museum, Antwerp, the Palais de Tokyo, Paris, the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, the New Museum, New York, and the Art Sonje Center, Seoul. She lives and works in New York City.
