Alberto Giacometti and the Perception of Reality

This book looks at a refined selection of drawings by Alberto Giacometti and examines them against more than one hundred letters exchanged between Giacometti and his parents, the majority of which have not previously been published. The choice of drawings and the selected correspondence illuminate important aspects of the development of Giacometti’s work over five decades of his life. Patrick de Vries also examines Alberto Giacometti’s friendships with important artists who were his contemporaries, such as Pablo Picasso, Francis Gruber, Balthus, and Tal-Coat. He examines the artists’ views of each other and the links and dissimilarities in their work. Discussions between Giacometti and his friend, the Japanese philosopher Isaku Yanaihara, reveal interesting insights into the, rarely discussed, subject of Giacometti’s fascination with East Asian Art.

ALBERTO GIACOMETTI (1901–1966) was one of the twentieth century’s most important sculptors. The work by the Swiss painter, sculptor, and printmaker was influenced by Cubism, and Surrealism. His best-known pieces are the the tall and long bronze sculptures made after the Second World War.

    The Origins of the Albertina

The Albertina in Vienna houses one of the world’s most eminent collections of art. This extensive, sumptuously illustrated volume presents the museum’s masterpieces acquired by the founder of the collection, Duke Albert of Saxe-Teschen, and his consort, the Grand Duchess Marie Christine. The history of the couple’s mercurial, fateful lives begins in the Baroque era at the court of Maria Theresa and moves through the years of revolution in America and Europe to the restoration of the conservative monarchies after the Vienna Congress in 1815. Well-informed essays shed light on their sojourns in Dresden, Rome, Paris, Brussels, and Vienna—centers of European culture and politics as well as hotbeds of social and intellectual innovations during the Enlightenment—and provide personal insight into the feudal lifestyle of the European aristocracy. Further contributions deal with the networks of collectors and art dealers as well as the history of the ideas behind this princely collection of prints. The Expanded Eye

The Expanded Eye takes a concerted look at the experimental side of art: here seeing means insight. The Expanded Eye presents paintings, objects, film and video installations from the 1950s to the present day: a spectrum that takes equal account of the playful experiments of postwar art and the radically altered premises of recent artistic practice.
The Expanded Eye shows how the horizons have widened in art, as abstraction has become dematerialization which has in turn led us into “fluid,” hybrid universes where very different levels of reality mingle. The removal of past barriers reflects the changed role of the artist as an explorer who has a playful side and who actively empathizes with his or her addressees, namely the public at large.
The publication also contains an anthology of texts from the most diverse subject areas—from artist statements by Lucio Fontana and Josef Albers to theoretical essays by Rudolf Arnheim and philosophical texts by Georg Kubler and Teilhard de Chardin.
